Hidden in Amy Macon’s past, as much a mystery as a survival guide for a torturous childhood, is the need to stitch together the fabric of a family's dark history. Her brother, Lee Macon, can't forget waking up inside his mother's coffin or the memory of the man who put him there. That's a secret he’s kept from Amy for 30 years. But if there's one thing they understand, it's out of a houseful of children, only two of them remain alive. Now, in the wake of their youngest sister’s murder, Amy pleads for the truth, knowing it will ease the scars brought on by time, if not the ones carved in her wrists. In this, Lee finds himself blindsided by a sister’s resolve, drawn up by the corners of a broken heart and forced to share what, as a boy, he so desperately fought to conceal. Problem is no one said it would be easy digging up the dead. It never is. Sifting through the bones of the past, means piecing together the mystery of a family long buried in violence. A provocative novel of suspense and redemption, The Weight of Glass is a story of one family’s struggle with revenge in the wake of tragedy.

Any book, even a novel, about child abuse is a heavy and emotional subject. Even though this is a harrowing subject, the emotional strength of this book makes it an important book to read.

This book is about multiple incidents of sexual, emotional and physical abuse and the ways 4 very different brothers and sisters in a dysfunctional family coped (or didn't cope) with this abuse from their stepfather and stepbrother. At times it is very disturbing but at other times it shows the strength of the human spirit when pushed to great extremes.

After many reports of child abuse in various religious organisations, it is interesting that the author chose to make the stepfather a pastor at a local church with the stepbrother following in his father's footsteps with extreme beliefs and actions.

The story is told through the reactions of these children in their adult life to what happened to them as children. At first I thought I could compare this book with Pat Conroy's "Prince of Tides" - but this book is a much deeper and more complex emotional story.

This is the first book released by Stuart Heatherington and I look forward with great interest to read his future books.

Child abuse is epidemic in our country. This book tells the story of three siblings left orphaned by their mother with an abusive step-father. The author calls this a novel of suspense, but I would classify it more as horror. I deal with children who are fighting to recover from the evils of child abuse, and I still couldn't read this book in the evening for fear of having nightmares. Even so, it's a book that I couldn't put down. The story is compelling. It's told with chapters that alternate from a present day reunion between brother and sister to flashbacks of their childhood. Each chapter pulls you inexorably into the next. If you're interested in a dark, psychological read, this will not disappoint you. Just be warned it's not for the faint at heart.

I agree with the reviewers who suggest that the book needed a professional copy editor. There are problems, particularly with homonyms, In the copy I received, there were issues with the formatting as well, sometimes making it very difficult to tell who was speaking. If the premise of the book interests you, though, don't let these problems stop you.
While I thought this book had all the makings of a great book, it almost fizzled out, leaving us with a rather disappointing ending. There were quite a few grammatical errors, a few spelling errors, and some continuity problems, but those I could have dealt with, and still given a five star rating.

Some things were given too much detail, too much time. Other things were very quickly glossed over, or sparse details were given, leaving me to wonder... "Huh?" Other things just refused to add up, no matter how much thought I put into it. A lot of thought goes into describing the hate built up in the main character, but other than two short examples, we're mostly left to imagine what could have happened. Leaving something to the reader's imagination is good; but to leave an entire background, an entire reason for a character's motives to us to figure out... That's never a good thing.

Annie's lesbian lover for another example her and Lee bounce back and forth, leaving us to wonder is this a laughing, sarcastic relationship? Or do these two people really dislike each other? A few pages will have you leaning towards the sarcastic relationship, and then BAM, the next page has you believing these two truly hate each other, and then it's back to the humorous exchanges.

It wasn't a bad book. It was engaging, and it kept my attention... but only barely.
A mess of trite characters doing and saying stereotypical things in stereotypical ways. You have seen all of these tired characters before

The evil philandering preacher who literally beats his step children over the head with his Bible, while himself violating all ten commandments. No redeeming values or shades of grey.

The preachers son, the weirdo outcast who says self-righteous things, receives preferential treatment at that hands of his wacko father, and who violently rebels and does so in a horrible way, not in a noble way. No redeeming value.

The lesbian daughter of the religious parents who turned away from the old religion to a new life of tolerance and inclusiveness.

And so on and so forth. They are all trite, and just repeat the stereotypical behavior seen in hundreds of other movies and books. Literally not a single one of these characters exists in the real world. They are solely the construct of a weak imagination. They are two dimensional, and that is spotting them a dimension.

Then the actual content. It is violent and perverse, but not in an original way. This is not the violence of No Country for Old Men. It is more like Freddy part XXIII or Jason part XVII. Just exploitative and ugly, but not in a way that furthers the story or develops the character. It is repellent, and that is all.

Overall, it was just unpleasant, tired, and distasteful. Talented authors have, with great effort, made these trite characters have some depth, but there is none of that there. Just plain bad.
